What happened to Makayla's family in Chicago P.D.? toggle section
Makayla Ward Burgess's family was murdered by her biological father, Tariq Morris, who is now serving a life sentence. She was initially placed under the protection of Kim and Adam, then entrusted to her mother's cousin, Katie. However, due to Katie's health issues, Makayla was moved to a child welfare center. Kim Burgess later became Makayla's guardian. Tariq and Nia attempted to kidnap Makayla from foster care, resulting in a violent encounter with Officer Kim Burgess.

Biography[]

Season 8[]

Makayla first appears in Tender Age crossing a street in a clear state of shock, where she meets Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek who escort her home, only to find her family massacred, the little girl is held at the station until she is taken to a foster home, which is attacked by her family's killers, for her safety she is taken to a safe house and placed under the protection of Kim and Adam, after the case is concluded she is entrusted to the care of her mother's cousin, Katie.

During In Your Care, while working on a case, Burgess and Ruzek discover that Makayla has been taken to a child welfare center and that Katie suffers from various disorders. Given this condition, Kim decides to become Makayla's guardian and takes her to his house.

Makayla is seen again in Trouble Dolls, when she makes a play for Kim and her puppets, the next day Kim takes Makayla to school, but during lessons, Makayla wakes up screaming and locks herself in a closet and comes out only after talking to Kim. that night Kim asks Adam to also become Makayla's guardian, after he has accepted she goes to sleep and sees Makayla in front of her door, after having made her climb into bed, she puts some wind chime dolls under her pillow and they start to sleep.

In The Other Side after Hailey repeatedly urges Adam to go to Makayla, he finally gives in and decides to go to her, she is seen receiving cereal from Adam and then sleeping with her head on his lap.

Season 9[]

In Closure, when Adam goes to the hospital, he reveals that he found a temporary babysitter for Makayla and that he told her that Kim is at work, at the end of the day, Makayla paints Adam's nails pink and he reveals to her that Kim is in the hospital , Makayla says she wants to see her and Adam takes her to the hospital, as soon as they arrive, Kim wakes up and greets them, with Makayla giving her her favorite stuffed animal.

Makayla appears at the beginning of Rage, where she comes home after shopping with Adam and tells Kim what happened with the shop assistant, then she is advised by Kim to try to only put sauce on pancakes and is given a napkin from Adam.

During Home Safe, Adam goes to pick up Makayla from school, but due to a technical glitch, he is unable to take her home, this becomes a reason for an argument between Adam and Kim, when they have resolved the issue, Adam takes Makayla to bed, and talks to him about the fact that they will live together, she agrees, and tells him about his "friend" Teddy, who has a car and who only wants to talk to her, this worries Adam, he tells Kim and together they discover that it is Theo Morris, Makayla's paternal uncle who wants sole custody.

In Blood Relation, Makayla, unaware of the legal battle for her custody, is at home with the babysitter Gabby Serrano, when Kim comes home, she hugs her and shows her the school project in which she will perform a play with her friend Jasmine and will need her hair with beaded afro braids, Kim tries to do it for her but due to the tension of the situation she makes a mess, so they decide to go to Kevin, whose aunt Jane takes care of Makayla, while she does it Kevin and Kim talk about the situation, when she is finished Kim says goodbye to the Atwaters and takes Makayla home. The custody trial ends with Kim and Adam winning, since Makayla is more attached to them, Kim and Adam go to their apartment and, to their horror, discover that Gabby has been killed and Makayla kidnapped.

In Gone, the intelligence desperately searches for Makayla, at first they suspect Theo, then they discover that he is the blackmailed one, at the end of the investigation, they kill one kidnapper and arrest the other and find Makayla unconscious, but alive.
