Plot[]
Hank and Antonio visit the cop imposter who is named Gerard Garner, and he reminds them that he asked for a lawyer but Hank says he came to offer a deal as he knows Garner is running with a crew and Antonio shows pictures of the assaulted Kristie Bradford, saying they want the perp who did it. Hank tells him if he gives up his conspirators he walks once they make an arrest, since it was technically not a robbery. Hearing this, Garner is initially hesitant and looks at the pictures, but Hank puts a countdown on the deal and Garner quickly reveals it was his friend Bug who he described as crazy and states he likely attacked Bradford. Antonio asks for Bug's real name and Garner answers its Clayton Howard who for all he knows is in charge. Garner also reveals Bug has a lookout in the casino to find winners who become targets, though declares he never met him.
Running the name reveals Bug's history of violent offenses and Bradford confirms he was the attacker; Intelligence decides to locate him immediately. After finding his residence, Roman and Kim are sent to observe him at his home while he seeing Bug come out in uniform. However, as he was leaving, he opens fire on them and flees in his car, causing a lengthy chase to ensue. In the end, they all crash their cars and Kim finds herself and Roman wounded, quickly calling for help while the offender has fled the scene.
After getting checked up, Kim shrugs off Adam's concerns while Roman is livid with Hank not notifying him and Kim about the threat, while telling Alvin to pipe down as he speaks to his boss who he continues to admonish. As he walks off, Hank simply smirks at his outburst. Kevin soon finds a weapon in the trunk: a shotgun with blood on it and they have it bagged for testing.
Jay and Erin visit an officer Sam Mularz, who reported his badge missing around the time the robberies occurred. He reveals as a part time security guard at a strip club, a woman snuck off with his badge and this caused his suspension but his story seems fishy to them, due to the situation. After realizing they think he is involved, he asserts his innocence while stating this is likely what the thief wants them to believe and shuts down any further attempt to talk, while stating his Union rep will see them if they press.
A casino pickpocket is detained and is approached by Kevin and Adam but he denies being involved in the robberies though volunteers to help identify the real culprit. Going over security footage, he identifies a shady man and Mouse runs his face to reveal he's Franklin Haynes who is revealed to be fellow criminal connected to Bug. When they go to detain Haynes, he is found in the bathroom that has been become a bloodbath with his hands bound and shot execution style. Bug has caught wind of the investigation and is cleaning up loose ends. The unit confirms Haynes' DNA was a match to the blood on the shotgun while realizing that the crew must be well connected to be able to get ahead of the cops with dismantling of their GPS systems and have suitable hiding places. They still have Sam Mularz as a suspect and decide to check out the mechanic shop, where the cars were found.
When visiting the mechanic, Jay and Erin tell him the cars may have been stolen however, the mechanic reveals that an Officer Sam Mularz came to the shop and checked them out, but that person was a woman with the real cop's badge. Realizing Mularz was truthful, they ask who his impostor came with, and the mechanic reveals she came with her partner, a man matching Bug's description. After showing the picture, its confirmed that it was him and surveillance video reveals the woman is Elizabeth McKenney.
Finding Elizabeth's home, Kim and Roman are sent to talk with her until noticing Bug walk pass the room, before he promptly flees the scene after seeing the cops. Roman quickly pursues him, while Kim fights McKenney and soon overpowers her, arresting the latter. Roman pursues Bug to an abandoned building where he and Bug brawl, before Roman overpowers the perp and arrests him, just as Platt and other officers burst in and take Bug away.
In the cage, a battered and handcuffed Bug is visited by Hank who questions him on his crimes of assault and murder, while he states that Intelligence have all the evidence against him. However, Hank wants to know how Bug got the cars, badges, and uniforms to pull off this robbery spree, stating his respect of the uniform and how he doesn't like imposters defiling it. An amused Bug remarks on his history of being abused and robbed by cops and declares that its actually satisfying to give one up but states he wants a deal before he says anything, and Hank agrees for a name. Bug reveals that it's a dirty cop working in burglary and robbery division: Detective Martin Watts, the same detective helping Intelligence in the investigation. When Hank expresses shock, a pleased Bug realizes he is familiar with Watts and laughs at how that look made it even better. Bug also implicates him as the mastermind behind the whole thing.
Intelligence goes over the case, noting Watts only agreed to help to keep an eye on his robbery spree and divert any attention away from him.
The unit goes to detain him but when they reach his home, his wife reveals he already left after saying goodbye to her, before they discover bags of money. They realize he went on the run and hid in a rented trailer. Hank tells the gathered officers that Watts has likely hunkered down and is awaiting confrontation. However, Platt tells Hank that she knows Watts and volunteers to speak with him. She finds the trailer he's in and he holds her at gunpoint, but she states she comes in peace and puts her weapon down to prove it, before asking how they got there.
Holding her at gunpoint, a tearful Watts informs her his reason for the robberies is because of his injury and how his recovery put him in debt. He continues by stating he felt he was owed more than what he deserved, as he was good at his job. Platt was able to relate because of her own injury from being shot and stated though she wanted to be in the field as a cop, she loved her position as a desk Sergeant since she can run the building from there. Through tears, Watts voices how she was fortunate, but he wasn't and aims at the shotgun at her, stating there was no coming back for him because he succumbed to crime.
He tells her that he was the orchestrator of all the robberies, but he couldn't shut it down after falling into deep once Bug got more ambitious and greedier. Watts breaks down in guilt at the assault of a woman and murder of a man, before he takes the gun and positions it at his head, as Platt pleads to him to keep calm. She tells him to think of his family, how they would be lost without him around. After breaking down, he empties the gun and tells her to get him a new bottle of booze. Before doing so, she asks for his remaining weapon, and he surrenders. Outside the trailer, Intelligence and the gathered cops are armed and ready before Platt comes out and escorts Watts out in cuffs, before handing him over to Antonio. Watts apologizes for his crimes, but Antonio tells him that he's getting him out of the area, so the media won't catch him.
