The Chicago Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency for the City of Chicago, Illinois. It is the second largest municipal law enforcement agency in the United States, behind the New York City Police Department and has more than 12,000 sworn officers.
The department consists of five bureaus, each of which is commanded by a Chief who is assisted by a Deputy Chief and report directly to the Deputy Superintendent.
Bureau of Patrol[]
The Bureau of Patrol is responsible for general field operations, protection of life and property, apprehension of criminals and enforcement of laws.[1] The bureau is split into three patrol area; Central, South & North, which are commanded by a deputy chief. The patrol areas consists of Patrol Districts and are headed by a Commander.
The Bureau of Organized Crime (AKA: Bureau of Counterterrorism) is responsible for intelligence gathering and complex investigations.[2] The bureau consists of: Criminal Network Group & Special Operations Group. The Criminal Network Group consists of the; Narcotics & Vice Division and Gang Investigation Division. The Special Operations Group consists of; Counterterrorism Division, Special Functions Division, Airport Operations Division and the Public Transportation Division.
Bureau of Internal Affairs[]
The Bureau of Internal Affairs (BIA) is responsible for investigating misconduct and corruption within the police department. There is only one division within the Bureau: Internal Affairs Division (IAD), this is why the abbreviations BIA and IAD (and sometimes just "IA") are used interchangeably.

Superintendent
The Superintendent of Police is in charge of running the entire police department. Appointed by the Mayor of Chicago,This is the Highest rank in the Chicago Police Department.
Deputy Superintendent
The Deputy Superintendent of Police is appointed by the Superintendent of Police. This is the Second highest rank in the Chicago Police Department.
Chief
Chiefs are typically in charge of a bureau.
Deputy Chief
Second-in-Command of a Bureau in some cases, or commander of an Area in others.
Commander
Commanders are typically in charge of a district or a Division.
Captain
Captains are typically executive officers of districts.
Lieutenant
Lieutenants are in charge of a Unit or Section.
Sergeant
Sergeants are Supervisors of a group of Officers.
Field Training Officer
Field training officers wear one chevron over one rocker, with "FTO" in the center of the insignia, but are not considered ranking officers.
Chicago detectives are not considered ranking officers, but rather officers assigned to specialized units, e.g. violent crimes, robbery, gang and narcotics (NAGIS), Internal Affairs Division (IAD), Major Accident Investigation Section (MAIS), etc. (Unless they hold the rank of sergeant or above.)

NATO Summit Service Award
Those who were in service between May 18 2012 and May 21 2012 and provided service to the NATO Summit.
Police Blue Shield Award
Those who have been seriously, critically or fatally injured in an accident in the line of duty.
Police Medal Award
Those who have accomplished or performed well in the opinion of the Superintendent.
Presidential Election Deployment Award
Those who were in service on November 4, 2008 during the Presidential Rally.
Superintendent's Award of Merit
Those who have achieved an outstanding accomplishment that has improved the department's administration or operations capabilities.
Superintendent's Award of Valor
Those who have demonstrated outstanding bravery, heroism, selflessness and courage.
Special Commendation Award
Those who have had a significant impact on public safety or crime prevention.
Special Service Award
Those who have contributed to an event and had a significant impact on the event, history and the department.
Traffic Stop of the Month Award
Those who conducted an excellent traffic stop in a professional manner that resulted in a quality arrest.

Those who exhibited exceptional professional skill and conduct during a coordinated operation.
