Plot[]

Adam is hanging out with his nephew and sister when he gets a text from Woods regarding their agreement. He goes to work early and heads into Voight's office to plant a listening device, but he backs out. He heads to the breakroom and finds Jay sleeping on the couch, having a nightmare. Ruzek wakes Halstead up and asks if he is okay, to which Halstead says he is.

Later that morning, Jay is sitting in his truck when a call of shots fired is heard. He heads to the location and finds the building being evacuated. He calls for backup and heads in to find a dead body. Voight meets Halstead at the scene and asks questions regarding the shooting. Jay tells Voight that the victim's name was Theresa Mattel and that two offenders used a military grenade during the shooting. Hailey joins them and shares that a witness saw the victim run into the building with a kid and later saw the offenders leave the building with a kid over their shoulders, implying the shooting was also a kidnapping.

Back at the district, Jay shows the team footage showing the victim and the kid running into the building, followed by two males in hoodies. Antonio tells the team about a kidnapping and ransom crew they have been after. Hailey tells the team how the crew goes after kids connected to the West-Side dope gang. They snatch a kid, ask for ransom, gangbanger pays with drug money, and the cops don't get involved. Antonio tells the team that the crew is made up of 3 males, white, Hispanic, and black. Kevin ID's the young boy as Cody Barton. They bring the mom in and ask questions regarding Cody and Theresa. She tells Voight that Cody was with his dad, Ben Barton, all weekend. Jay and Hailey go over to Ben Barton's place and find it empty. There is a package on the kitchen counter, and a child's ear is inside.

Antonio talks to a CI whose nephew was also kidnapped 6 months ago. The CI tells him that one of the offenders had an injured arm. Using the descriptions given about the offender, the team is able to ID one of the men as Luis Vega. He used to be in the military. Jay asks to go undercover to gain Luis' trust so the team can find the boy. Antonio thinks it's a bad idea, but Jay argues, saying he knows how to connect with Luis because of his military background. Voight asks Hailey what she thinks, but she claims to be neutral about the situation, so he agrees with the undercover operation. While setting up Jay's wire, Jay asks Hailey why she was neutral about him going undercover. She tells him she has been concerned about him lately and asks if he is okay. Before Jay can answer, Kevin informs the two partners that Luis is at the Veil Club, and one of the bartenders is Camila, Luis' sister.

Halstead goes to the bar and asks Camilla for a beer. He introduces himself to Luis and Camilla as Ryan, but Luis doesn't seem interested in mingling. Jay continues to talk to Camilla, but their attention shifts when Luis gets into an argument with two men. Jay heads over to see what's going on, but things get messy when Luis punches one of the men, and Jay joins in. Eventually, Hailey breaks the fight, and Jay and Luis leave the bar. They sit outside Luis' place, waiting for Camila to get home. Jay uses the time to get closer to Luis, asking if he can find him some sort of job, as his current job is tedious, but Luis doesn't want to help. Camilla gets home and lets the two men inside, annoyed at what happened at the bar. Luis thanks Jay for having his back at the bar and heads to bed, and Camilla goes to check on him, leaving Jay alone in their apartment. He uses the time to look around the apartment for anything regarding their case but is interrupted by Camilla. Jay tries flirting with her, gaining some trust between the two. Jay asks about Luis' drug and alcohol problem, claiming that he dealt with the same thing when he returned from overseas.

Meanwhile, at the district, Adam and Kevin go over the wire footage from the bar, which shows Jay punching a civilian, which could get him in trouble. Kevin reminds Adam to delete the footage, and Adam agrees but secretly saves the file onto a flash drive. After talking to one of Antonio's CI's, they finally find Ben Barton and bring him in. Ben tells Voight and Antonio how the men who took Cody are asking for $1 million in 48 hours. Voight asks Ben to cooperate with the police to help save Cody, and he finally agrees.

The next day, Jay meets up with Upton and Voight, and they go over the case. Hailey asks Jay how he's doing, wanting to know whether what he said to Camilla the other day was true. Jay says he's fine, telling Hailey he gets what Luis is going through. Voight asks Jay to gain Luis' trust by giving him real drugs as a bribe. Jay is against the idea, as it is illegal, but Voight doesn't care. Jay heads to Luis' place, asking if Camilla is home, but instead, the two men decide to have drinks to celebrate Jay losing his job. They share stories about lives they couldn't save while overseas, describing how they felt. Eventually, Jay decides to head home and gives Luis the drugs to help him take the edge off if he figures out a job for him. Back at the district, Voight gets mad at Denny when he brings in a bag of counterfeit money to use as their ransom money, saying that the crew will kill the boy when they see the fake money. Denny tells Voight that he can't do anything leaving Voight mad.

Halstead goes to Luis' place again the next day, wanting to know if Luis had found him a job but is surprised to see two other men at the apartment as well. Outside, Alvin and Hailey run the two men's cars and identify them as Josh Miller and Marcus Tate. They match the description of Luis' partners in the kidnapping. When Jay gets in on the new information, he asks Voight to pull Marcus Tate so that Luis can ask Josh to use Jay for the job. Hailey thinks it's too risky and says no, which annoys Jay and the two argue about how Jay trusts Luis when he shouldn't. Eventually, Voight interrupts and agrees with Jay's plan leaving Hailey annoyed. Adam and Kevin secretly arrest Marcus Tate, hoping Jay's plan can work. Jay heads back to the bar where Camilla works and asks where Luis is. Camilla pretends to be offended that Jay was there to talk to Luis and not her, and Jay saves himself by kissing her. They flirt, and Camilla finally gives Jay Luis' location. When Jay finds Luis, he looks stressed, so Jay asks him what's wrong. Luis tells Jay how one of the men in his crew just disappeared, and now they need a new man to continue their plan. Jay begs Luis to have him join, and after a bit of hesitation, Luis brings Jay to Josh Miller. Josh doesn't like Jay but finally agrees, telling Jay the only thing he will do is drive. Halstead continues to press for more information, and Luis finally tells him the truth about the kid.

At the same time, Voight is with Ben and his ex-wife, and they get a call from Cody's kidnapper, Josh Miller. Instead of giving them the money, Ben tells them he is calling the cops and hangs up. Josh is frustrated, which worries Jay and Luis. Jay tells Luis to think straight, claiming that he can't handle another kid's death, so the two devise a plan. When they get to the location with Josh, they knock Josh unconscious and go into the warehouse to save the kid. When they find the kid, they are shot at by some of Josh's men. Jay gets the boy to safety, addressing himself as a cop as the rest of Intelligence gets to the warehouse. Luis and Jay continue to shoot at the men, but Luis gets hit. Jay drags Luis' body into a corner, trying to save him, and Hailey slowly approaches, calling out his name. Jay seems to be in another headspace because he points his gun at Upton. He finally lowers his gun, realizing it's just Hailey but is clearly saddened by Luis' death.

At med, Voight brings Ben and his ex-wife to see their son, Cody, who is being treated. Adam meets up with Woods giving him the flash drive proving official misconduct. He asks whether he is off the hook, but Woods just laughs it off. Jay is on his way to see Camilla when he gets a call from Hailey, which he ignores. When he gets to her place. Camilla asks whether Jay was there when Luis died, but he lies and comforts her.

Quotes[]

Voight: What're you waiting around for, a 'thank you' or 'I'm sorry'? Cuz it ain't happening. So why don't you get out of here?

Halstead: I'm sorry, I say stupid stuff when beautiful women kiss me out of the blue.

Voight: I know neither one of you knows me, but you can trust me. I lost my son, so I'm going to do everything I can to make sure you don't.
