Plot[]

Kim, Adam, and Kevin are talking with Trudy about her birthday plans at Molly's when Kevin gets a call. He tells Ruzek that he needs to go to Bucktown quickly and will meet everyone at Molly's. At Molly's, Hailey, Jay, Antonio, Kim, and Adam enjoy their night as Trudy does karaoke. Ruzek calls Kevin asking where he is, but it goes straight to voicemail.

Meanwhile, Kevin goes to a house and finds it broken into, but before he can call for backup, someone puts a gun to his head and knocks him unconscious. The next day, back at the district, Adam comes into work late, missing the mandatory training. He tells the team how he was looking for Kevin but couldn't find him, asking the rest of the team if they knew anything. Trudy pings his phone and finds it located in Rosewood, which is nowhere near Bucktown. The team heads there and finds his car parked in front of a house belonging to a felon named Joe Baker. Inside they find blood and Kevin's badge and ID, proving that someone kidnapped Atwater.

Hailey tells Voight how Kevin got a few texts from someone named Michelle asking for Kevin to call back. After searching the garage, Antonio finds a brick of cocaine, leading them to realize that Joe Baker sells drugs. After going through Joe Baker's phone, they discover that he last talked to a guy named Calvin Hill. Kim and Antonio go talk to him, and Calvin tells them that he last saw Joe at a bar after having drinks, and Joe left with a girl named Sonya. Back at the district, Trudy informs the team that the blood found at the house matches Kevin, which scares everyone. After going through Joe Baker's social media, Hailey shows a recently posted video by an anonymous user. The video shows Kevin and Joe Baker chained up in some sort of old church. They never get a visual of their offender but instead get a tattoo of his hand.

Meanwhile, Kevin tries to free himself from his restraints while arguing with Joe. Kevin believes that Joe stole drugs from their kidnappers, but Joe denies saying he is clean. Kevin, still not believing the story, asks him to come clean, but Joe tells Kevin to come clean instead, as Kevin was the one that murdered his son.

Back at the District, Kim tells Voight about the death of Joe's son, Ronnie. She tells him how back when Atwater was on patrol, Ronnie robbed a 7-Eleven and had killed the manager. He flees the scene, but Atwater catches up, and when Ronnie pulls a gun, Atwater shoots and kills him. Atwater was under heavy pressure after the shooting but was later cleared. Adam interrupts them and tells Voight how the woman, Michelle, who had messaged Atwater, was Joe Baker's sister. They bring her in, hoping to get more information, but she doesn't know much. She tells them how even though Joe blames Kevin for his son's death, she knows Kevin did the right thing. So, when Joe went missing a few days ago, she called Kevin asking for help. Voight tells Michelle how Joe was taken because he had stolen drugs from somebody. Still, Michelle believes that Joe didn't steal any drugs.

Meanwhile, the offenders ask Joe and Kevin again where the stolen drugs are, but they both deny knowing anything. After withdrawing cash from Joe's bank account, they realize that he has $19,000 in his account, but when Joe tells them that he won't give it to them, the older offender shoots Joe in the shoulder. At the district, Antonio informs the team how Joe Baker's credit card was just used by a man in a mask. Voight sends Jay and Hailey to the bank to get more information and has the rest of the unit dig into pod footage near the ATM. Kevin continues to try to get out of the place but has no luck. As time passes, Joe decides to confront Kevin about his son's shooting, but Kevin tells him he had no choice but to shoot him. Not liking how Kevin is blaming the whole incident on Ronnie, he reminds Kevin that he has the power right now because if their captors find out that Kevin is actually a cop, they will kill him.

Meanwhile, Antonio and Kim interrogate Sonya, the last woman seen with Joe Baker. Her real name is Elisa. She tells them that she was paid by Reimundo Morales to seduce Joe and drive him to a location where he was waiting. Kim and Antonio ask for more information, but Elisa cries, not saying anything. Fed up with her, Kim decides to press charges on Elisa for kidnapping.

Reimundo once again asks where his drugs are, but Joe instead attempts to tell the truth about Kevin. Before he can say anything, Kevin steps up and tells Reimundo how he and a friend was the one that stole the drugs. Kevin insists on giving back the drugs, but instead, Reimundo decides to drill a hole in his leg as revenge. Later, as Kevin tends to his injury, Reimundo's partner walks in, and Kevin tells him how he can give them $100,000 as compensation.

Back at the district, Trudy and Antonio tell Voight how Calvin Hill's fingerprints were all over the stolen brick of cocaine. Voight tells Antonio to put Calvin in the cage, but Antonio hesitates. When Voight asks again, he obeys. Both Kevin and Joe are tending to their wounds when Joe tells Kevin how he has imagined killing Kevin. Kevin blames Joe for his son's actions, telling him that Ronnie had learned the wrong ways from his father. Al and Voight confront Calvin in the cage, threatening to kill him if he doesn't come clean about the drugs. After a bit of hesitation, Calvin confesses.

Reimundo finally agrees to the $100,000 deal with Kevin and hands him a cell phone. Adam is comforting Kim at the district when his undercover phone rings. Thinking it could be a tip from a CI, he answers but is surprised to hear Kevin on the line. Kevin creates a story, telling Adam that he needs $100,000 quickly. Adam agrees and sets up a time and a place to pass the money. The team is worried that Woods will deny the 1505 funds, but Voight asks Alvin to grab the money from his basement and attach a GPS tracker to the bag. Later at the meet place, Adam meets up with Reimundo's partner and gives him the cash.

Meanwhile, Kevin continues to try to break his bonds when Joe asks him what Ronnie said before he died, but Kevin ignores him, telling him that it doesn't matter. The team is hoping their offender will lead them directly to where Kevin is held, but things go south when Reimundo calls his partner and tells him to go to another location. The team moves in and surrounds Reimundo's partner, telling him to drop his gun, but instead, he points his gun at Kim, and Antonio has no choice but to shoot and kill him. Adam is furious at Antonio, as their only lead to finding Kevin is now dead, but Kim calms him down. The team decides to search all abandoned churches until they find Kevin.

After hearing that the meet was a set-up, Reimundo goes to kill Joe and Kevin but finds they have escaped. He searches the whole church and finally finds and shoots at them, missing. Joe and Kevin hide for cover, but Reimundo finds Joe and is about to kill him when Kevin jumps on him, trying to disarm him. Reimundo drops his gun but grabs another weapon from his pocket, trying to aim at Kevin. Joe grabs the gun on the floor and shoots Reimundo, killing him. Kevin frees himself from Reimundo's dead body but is shocked when Joe points the gun at him. Joe asks again what Ronnie told him before he died, and Kevin finally tells him that Ronnie's last words were, "I don't get down on my knees for no man". After hearing this, Joe drops the gun just as Adam walks in.

Outside the church, Kevin asks Voight if they can look the other way on the drugs Joe stole, but Voight informs him how Calvin Hill was the one who stole the drugs, which is a relief for Kevin. Kim hugs him and tells Kevin that she is glad he is okay. Before getting checked out by paramedics, he apologizes to Trudy for missing her birthday. Instead, she gives him a big hug. Meanwhile, Adam apologizes to Antonio, claiming he was just worried for Kevin, and Antonio accepts his apology. At the hospital, Kevin visits Joe and apologizes for assuming he stole the drugs. As he is about to leave, Joe stops him and tells Kevin how he wanted to kill him, but when Kevin told him what Ronnie had said before he died, he couldn't. He tells Kevin how he taught Ronnie to never stand down for any man and now blames himself for the way he raised Ronnie.

Quotes[]

Atwater: But none of this is on you, huh?
Joe: Me?
Atwater: I knew Ronnie. He wasn't a bad kid. Until he started imitating his gangbanger daddy.
Joe: I was teaching him how to be a man.
Atwater: You was teaching him how to die.

Voight: Why not call the police?
Michelle: I did. The car never showed. They get here fast to arrest us, not so much when we need help.
