Plot[]
On a nightly routine traffic stop, several CPD officers are managing cars among them are Officers Sean Roman and Kim Burgess, who speaks with a man who tells her he's a Professor driving to Canada for a college lecture. Kim asks if she'd be allowed to search his vehicle, something he allows but she noticed something amiss and drug hounds were called in. Detectives Alvin Olinsky and Antonio Dawson arrive with other cops, as the man gets worried when the dogs find something, and the layer was lifted to reveal drugs. The driver states he has no idea what it is, as Alvin tells him its a brick of heroin, before having the man arrested and the drugs confiscated.
In interrogation, the man claims no knowledge of the drugs but Voight and Dawson are not buying it. Going over his background, they discover his name is Adam Ames who is a college professor that does not even have so much as a speeding ticket to his name. They also discover he is married with a loving family. Intelligence ponder on how such a man with a spotless record could certainly turn into a life of crime so quickly decide to look into his family. They decide to investigate and because Kim found it, they allow her to participate in the case.
Meanwhile, Roman decides that he wants to be a TO but Platt tells him she does not think he is ready. When he voices that he is, she decides to take him up on it and tells him in order to see if he really is capable she will act as a rookie officer and train him along the way. Accepting the challenge, Roman agrees to go for a drive where Roman proves himself. Platt is left impressed by his capabilities.
At the Ames residence, his wife and daughter are visited by Burgess and Lindsay. They are upset by the accusations into the Ames patriarch. The mother Claire answers that she has no knowledge but will get her husband a lawyer. As she walks off, the daughter Pearl tells the officers that her father is a good man and would not do anything like this.
Intelligence discover that Ames had work done on his car and decide to visit the person who did the work. The mechanic is pressured into talking and denies seeing Ames but does give up another name Johnny Zakarian. Getting his address, Intelligence proceeds to raid his house but find smoke coming from it. Inside they discover a carnage in which Johnny has been burned alive and a child has been shot in the head. They soon discovered at the boy must’ve witnessed the murder it was silenced as a result. The mother of the boy is showing to be destroyed by this news. Further search of the house reveals that Johnny had a girlfriend and he said to follow that lead.
Roman continues his T.O training with Platt, who believes he's enjoying not doing anything but he surprised her by bringing up important lessons on the drive. He tells Trudy that he will earn his right and she expresses amazement at his ability. Along the way, they find a disoriented man in the road and they find he doesn't speak English. Deciding to hold off on Roman's training, they bring the man to the precinct.
In interrogation, Ames is confronted by Dawson on Johnny's death and he denies knowing the latter, while mentioning it was coincidence on him putting drugs in his car. However, Dawson angrily brings up how a child was killed for witnessing it, resulting in Ames becoming horrified. Dawson tells him if he knew of the drugs and Johnny, now he is an accessory to a double murder and the shocked man tries to give a new lead. When Johnny's girlfriend is found, she gives Intelligence the name of Johnny's friend before ordering them out to maintain a cover on not knowing anything. Johnny's friend is found but seeing the cops, he bolts and ends up dead in the process. Further research in the friend, Intelligence discovers the friend is connected to a drug gang and this causes questions to be raised on how Ames fits in.
Mouse soon reveals a secret apartment in Ames' name, which not even his family knew on and start to question his history. Back at the precinct, Ames is ordered to reveal the truth of his secrets, but he refuses to speak without a lawyer. As a result, Voight has him cuffed to the railing and has some of his belongings taken. Intelligence searches the apartment, where the landlord says suspicious men often come in, before Jay discovers letters with convicts and Kevin finds Ames has been pen pals with inmates, containing graphic contents. Alvin notes that they come from at least ten men. The unit soon realize he was using the apartment to have various sexual trysts with multiple inmates from different prisons, before taking note of an inmate named Peter Walker, a recently released inmate who Ames appeared to be gentler with letters to him even having a picture. They also learn Peter was cellmates with Johnny Zakarian and note with his record of scamming, he likely used Ames as a patsy for the trafficking.
They confront Ames with their knowledge of his hidden life and he brings up his need for a companion to satisfy his desires, bonding with them because of his secrets and seeing them as fellow outcasts. After Voight voices suspicions of Peter being the one who arranged the drug haul, Ames denies this and attempts to take all the blame, though Intelligence aren't buying that he knows foreign gangsters, knowing he was protecting his lover and told him to fess up. He reluctantly explained the arrangement and how he believes that he and Peter are in love, with him even wanting to leave his family to fulfill it. Ames soon relays that someone was after Peter and he decided to help him with the drugs before he asked if his wife knew about his indiscretions, but the cops told him that he could tell her.
After Intelligence learn Peter lives at Ames' apartment, Lindsay and Burgess bring him in. When questioned by Lindsay and Jay on the drugs or the murder of his cellmate, he denies knowledge but is visibly distressed when he is shown a picture of the murdered boy who witnessed the crime. Regardless, Peter does not own up to the crimes and when questioned about the relationship with Ames, he downplays it into him merely cuddling him and that Ames did everything else on his own. Intelligence convene and note Peter is lying on his involvement, clearly having played Ames from the start.
Soon Claire Ames comes in and reveals her daughter Pearl has been snatched by men claiming that Ames owes them money. She reveals a picture of her daughter with a gun to her head, stating the men threatened her not to go to the cops. Intelligence shows this to a frantic Ames, who begs them to talk with Peter of the situation, but they make him realize he was being conned from the start, as Ames breaks down at being used and what his actions led to. Voight asks the tearful man on something Peter cares about, as its clearly not him. Thinking, Ames revealed that Peter had a younger brother who had a drug addiction, but Peter always protected him and they decide to follow that while Ames begs them to save Pearl.
Peter continues to wait in the cage, as Voight comes in with a photo of Ames' daughter Pearl with a gun to her head and asks Peter to tell him who is holding her. He again tries to deny everything, until he witnesses his brother Marco being pulled in. Seeing him, he quickly asserts his brother had nothing to do with this and assured the pleading Marco that he will help him before watching him be hauled off. Voight shows Peter a brick of heroin and tells him that he could either put it away or place it in the bed of Marco's truck, pull him over and arrest him. He also voiced on how that could entail a lengthy sentence at Stateville prison but this all can be avoided unless Peter simply comes clean about everything he's done. Horrified, Peter looked at Alvin who coldly informs him don't look at him for help, before Voight once more asks who took Pearl Ames and Peter is forced to admit the gang leader that he was working for is named Gasper, who is unhinged and happens to own a construction site. He then reveals Pearl was in Gasper's trailer after he recognized the background from the picture. This led Intelligence to a raid that ended with Gasper's arrest and Pearl's rescue.
Pearl is then brought to the precinct, where she observes her father and Lindsay tells her that Ames is aware she knows everything he has done. Distraught, Pearl wonders what led to this, before she reveals that her father often taught her to face the consequences of her actions. Lindsay tells her that a child died because of his choice to help criminals but does state his decision to cooperate with them will be taken into consideration. Pearl enters the interrogation room, where her father tearfully embraces her and apologizes for it all.
Meanwhile, Jay starts his gig as security at a medical marijuana clinic and Brianna welcomes him. Jay meets fellow guard Terry and they both note with their circumstances this was their last job, due to Jay being a cop and Terry just getting sober from his stint in rehab. However, both bond with their military experience.
At Molly's, Lindsay, Burgess, Reese, and Brett are hanging out while discussing the case. It is revealed Ames was looking at ten years for his crimes and Reese voices pity for Ames on being led on by Peter. Although it is brought up Ames did that himself, Lindsay tells them that he thought he was in love and that love will make people do crazy things. Everyone agrees before Lindsay answers a call from Halstead.
